Dating in the 21st Century: Should we be Swiping Right on Dating Apps?

A feature article of mine that was published in the February 2025 edition of Forge Press. I enjoyed writing this article as it gave me the opportunity to conduct interviews with my peers on the topic, which is something I had not done before. Writing another feature piece for Forge has solidified that this form of article is a favourite of mine- I like the ability to discuss concepts at length and incorporate expert and peer opinions alongside my own critical thinking.

Married At First Sight UK: Anything but Happily Ever After in this Toxic TV Show

Forget the wedding bells: alarm bells are ringing for this toxic reality TV show.

This was my first attempt at a shorter-form opinion piece that was published in the print edition Forge Press. Writing this article was a great opportunity to experiment with different styles and I gained valuable experience in collaborating with editors as I requested some guidance on how best to tackle this new writing form.

Sheffield Hallam aims to make graduations more accessible with alternative ceremonies

Sheffield Hallam University has introduced alternative graduation ceremonies for current graduates in an effort to make them more accessible.

This article is a news piece I wrote for The Sheffield Tab, a student-run online publication shared by students at The University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University. In addition to researching and writing this article, I also learnt how to upload it to The Sheffield Tab's website using WordPress, something that will be of use to me in the future when I eventually set up my own blog site.

Off The Shelf Review: Coal - Forge Press

“An emotional journey into the individual lives and testimonies that make up the whole picture of a history so integral to the area in which we live and work”

A review of a talk I attended by the authors and editors of this anthology celebrating the 40th anniversary of the miner's strikes. This was very exciting as it was the first time I had received a press pass to attend an event! The talk was part of the Off the Shelf Festival of Words that was cohosted by the University of Sheffield.

Is Starmer’s Recent Donation Controversy the Final Nail in the Coffin for our Trust in Politics?

News of the Labour party’s expensive freebies last month has raised questions about the hypocrisy of our latest government. But can the Starmer cabinet’s acceptance of lavish gifts really be called a ‘scandal’?

This is an opinion piece on the Labour party donation controversy that occurred in September 2024. Going forwards I would like to set up my own blog/website to self-publish more articles like this.

Is Short-Form Content Ruining the Collective Attention Span?

A feature article of mine that was published in the September 2024 edition of Forge Press, the University of Sheffield's student-run newspaper. I focused on the impacts of short-form social media content like TikTok on children and young adults, interviewing my peers and PhD student who specialises in the subject as well as looking at expert opinions. This was the first feature I had ever written, and my first published piece of work.

About

I am currently in my final year of a BA in Sociology at the University of Sheffield. I am interested in pursuing a career in Journalism in the future, ideally writing long form political, social commentary or opinion pieces for a broadsheet newspaper. I am also considering a career in Communications for an NGO. At the moment, I am working towards getting onto an MA Journalism course at the University of Sheffield; building up a portfolio of written work; and gaining relevant work experience in the field.
